Metamorphosis.
One Merriam-Webster definition reads -
"a striking alteration in appearance, character, or circumstances."
Another from Dictionary.com says -
"a profound change in form from one stage to the next in the life history of an organism."
We may not understand everything about metamorphosis in regard to caterpillars and butterflies but there is at least certainty in this: one doesn't exist without the other. Despite the fact that a caterpillar bears no resemblance to a butterfly and a butterfly bears no resemblance to a caterpillar, the two are inextricably linked.
So it is in my life and my own "metamorphosis." I am not who I used to be. And with any luck, I am not who I will be. At least not entirely. On any given day, I am one piece of many parts developed over many years. I may not resemble all of those pieces all of the time but they have all been necessary for me to become who I am in this moment. Some of life's stages have been painfully lived. In some stages I have felt lost much like the caterpillar being dissolved in its chrysalis, and some have been like stretching glorious new wings for the first time!
Change is hard. Change is confusing. Change is beautiful. Change is constant.
